People come to ketamine-assisted psychotherapy (KAP) from different starting points.

You may be considering KAP because therapy, medication, or other approaches have helped only partially. You may understand yourself well yet still feel caught in patterns that have not shifted in the way you hoped. You may already receive prescribed ketamine and want more intentional psychotherapy around the experience. Or you may simply be curious and trying to decide whether this is something worth exploring.

You do not need to know yet.

At Mind Body Well Therapy, Pllc, I provide the psychotherapy component of ketamine-assisted psychotherapy, or KAP. I'm Lucrezia Mangione, LCPC, NCC, BC-TMH, a Holistic Integrative Psychotherapist. My work is grounded in evidence-based psychotherapy and guided by an evidence-informed, whole-person approach that considers mind, body, heart, spirit, and lived experience. I refer to this broader approach as Holistic Integrative Psychotherapy, or more simply, Holistic Therapy. My role may include preparation, therapeutic support during a prescribed dosing session when appropriate, and integration afterward.

I do not prescribe ketamine. Medical eligibility, prescribing, medication instructions, dosing decisions, and medical care remain the responsibility of an independent medical provider.

If you're asking “Is ketamine-assisted psychotherapy right for me?”, there are two related questions to consider: whether psychotherapy-supported ketamine care fits what you are looking for, and whether a medical provider determines that ketamine is medically appropriate.

This page can help you think through the first question.

For a broader overview of psychotherapy-supported ketamine care, preparation, integration, and coordinated treatment options, explore Ketamine Therapy.

Is Ketamine-Assisted Psychotherapy Right for Me? What Fit Means

There is no online checklist that can tell you whether ketamine-assisted psychotherapy is right for you. A diagnosis alone does not answer the question. Neither does the number of medications you have tried, how long you have been in therapy, or whether ketamine has helped someone you know.

It is more useful to separate therapeutic fit from medical eligibility.

An independent medical provider determines whether ketamine may be medically appropriate and is responsible for prescribing and medical care. I help you consider whether the psychotherapy component of KAP fits your goals, circumstances, expectations, and the kind of support you are seeking. A psychotherapy assessment cannot replace medical screening, and medical clearance does not automatically mean that KAP psychotherapy is a good fit.

When Ketamine-Assisted Psychotherapy May Be Worth Exploring

Many people who inquire about KAP carry more than they show.

You may seem capable on the outside while privately feeling anxious, worn down, disconnected, or stuck in patterns that have not changed. You may have done meaningful work in therapy and understand yourself quite well, yet find that insight alone has not brought the movement you hoped for.

Sometimes previous care has helped—but only partially. That does not mean your therapy or medication failed. It may mean you now know more about what has been useful, what remains difficult, and what you would like to approach differently.

KAP may be worth exploring when you are interested in another way of working with persistent concerns and specifically want psychotherapy to be part of that care. For some people, Holistic Integrative Psychotherapy provides a useful framework for considering the experience within the larger context of their emotional life, relationships, body, and daily life.  You do not have to be in crisis, out of options, or at the end of a long list of treatments before asking about it. You may also already have a prescriber and simply want focused KAP preparation or integration around your sessions, or a trusted therapist you'd like to keep seeing alongside this work.

These situations may help explain why you're asking “Is ketamine-assisted psychotherapy right for me?” They do not determine whether KAP is appropriate.

KAP Is a Psychotherapy Process

Ketamine-assisted psychotherapy is more than receiving ketamine and talking about it afterward.

Depending on your needs and care arrangement, psychotherapy may include preparation before a dosing session, therapeutic support during a prescribed session when appropriate, integration afterward, or a combination of these. Preparation can help you clarify what brings you to the work and think through the support you may need. When therapeutic support during dosing is part of the plan, my role is to provide a grounded psychotherapy presence—not medication administration, medical supervision, or medical monitoring.

Integration gives us space afterward to reflect on what arose and consider how it may relate to your relationships, choices, patterns, and daily life. It does not require turning every experience into a profound insight. Sometimes the useful work is simply noticing what came up, understanding it a little differently, or identifying one small thing you want to carry forward.

Part of deciding whether KAP fits is considering whether you are interested in the psychotherapy process, not only the medication. For clients drawn to Holistic Therapy, that psychotherapy process can also create room to consider the broader patterns, relationships, experiences, and whole-person context surrounding what arises.

What Readiness for KAP Can Look Like

Readiness does not mean feeling completely certain.

You do not have to feel fearless about an altered-state experience, be especially adventurous or spiritual, or already believe that ketamine will help. Interest and hesitation can exist at the same time.

Readiness is more practical and collaborative than that. It may be useful to consider whether you can:

  • talk openly about what you hope might change and what concerns you;
  • participate in psychotherapy before and after a ketamine session;
  • make room for the appointments, support, and follow-through involved;
  • ask questions when something does not feel clear;
  • use available support when you need it;
  • approach the process without requiring a guaranteed outcome.

This is also consistent with Holistic Integrative Psychotherapy: readiness is considered in the context of the whole person rather than reduced to a single symptom, diagnosis, or checklist.

Expectations matter too. KAP is not a shortcut around therapy or the rest of your life. A meaningful ketamine experience does not automatically resolve a long-standing pattern, and a quiet, confusing, or emotionally difficult experience does not automatically mean treatment has failed. It is also reasonable to feel nervous about changes in perception, emotional intensity, or not knowing exactly what an experience will be like—those concerns can be discussed.

If you're asking “Is ketamine-assisted psychotherapy right for me?”, readiness is one part of what we can consider together. It is not a test you have to pass before reaching out.

When Another Step May Come First

Being interested in KAP does not mean it needs to happen now.

You may have medical questions that need evaluation, psychiatric or diagnostic questions that need clarification, or you may need more support or stability before adding an altered-state treatment to your care. Practical circumstances may also make it difficult to create the time or support the process requires.

You may realize that you are primarily looking for medication treatment rather than psychotherapy. In that case, an appropriate medical provider is the better starting point. Or another form of psychotherapy or mental health care may fit what you need right now more closely.

If you are dealing with an immediate safety concern or cannot remain safe, a routine KAP consultation is not the appropriate next step; urgent or emergency evaluation is needed.

"Not now" does not necessarily mean "never." You may decide to proceed, gather more information, coordinate with another provider, wait, choose another approach, or decide that KAP is not right for you. An informed decision does not have to end with treatment.

You do not need to sort through any of this on your own first. A consultation can be where we work out which of these applies to you.

You Do Not Have to Be Certain Before You Ask

I offer a one-time, no-charge consultation so we can briefly discuss what has brought you to KAP and what kind of psychotherapy support you are looking for. It is not a commitment to treatment, a clinical intake, or a medical evaluation.

We may talk about what you hope might be different, what you have already tried, what attracts you to KAP, what makes you hesitant, and whether you already have a therapist or ketamine prescriber. If you are also looking for Holistic Therapy, we can talk about how KAP psychotherapy may or may not fit within the broader kind of care you are seeking. Sometimes the conversation leads to further exploration of KAP. Sometimes another form of therapy, additional evaluation, or more information makes more sense first.

And if we are not the right fit, knowing that early matters too.

If You Want to Explore KAP Further

I provide KAP psychotherapy in person in Oxford, Connecticut, and online to eligible clients who are physically located in Connecticut, Maryland, Virginia, and Florida. Specific KAP services depend on your location, clinical needs, medical provider, and care arrangement.

If you're still wondering “Is ketamine-assisted psychotherapy right for me?”, a consultation gives us a place to consider the psychotherapy side of that decision and whether working together may be a reasonable fit.

If you would rather begin by learning and listening, a KAP Information Session offers another way to explore the topic before deciding whether you want an individual conversation.
