Biofeedback EEG page update 5-7-25 by Lucrezia Mangione, LCPC, NCC, BC-TMH, DCEP
Discover the power of EEG Biofeedback, a gentle, non-invasive, yet powerful way to unleash the power of your highly sensitive nervous system and brain to improve your mental wellness and move toward your health goals. In today's busy world, caring for your sensitive brain and nervous system is a powerful gift you can give yourself to promote your cognitive health and impact your mental health by supporting the healthy functioning of your brain. EEG Biofeedback is like having a helpful friend on your journey to feeling better and stronger mentally.
EEG Biofeedback* is training your brain with gentle exercises that help your brain and nervous system work more smoothly and efficiently.
Your brain loves to operate in a smooth, calm way. When it remembers how to do that, through the exercise of Biofeedback EEG, your brain grows stronger and becomes even better at what it does naturally.
Think about it like going to the gym, lifting weights, attending yoga classes, and becoming more flexible as you do your yoga postures. Both result in creating a more muscular body and mind. Brain training does the same. Exercising your brain with EEG Biofeedback impacts your mood, your focus, your energy level, and your sleep in positive ways, especially for those who are highly sensitive. It is not therapy, though it is often done in tandem with therapy. It is training and exercising your mind.
Think of your brain as a soccer team.
Imagine your brain is like a soccer team with different players
representing various brain functions. Sometimes, these players get out
of sync, leading to chaos on the field - like in your thoughts and
feelings. EEG biofeedback acts like a coach, guiding each player to work
harmoniously, creating smooth and coordinated gameplay - like precise,
focused thoughts and improving mood. For example, the players run around
wildly if you're anxious. The neurofeedback coach helps them calm down,
find their positions, and play as a team, resulting in a more balanced
and peaceful mind. Or if you're feeling sad or depressed, the players
are sluggish and not communicating well. The neurofeedback coach helps
them find their energy, communicate better, and play as a team,
resulting in a more balanced and uplifted state of mind.
And guess what? The coach knows what to do because you are the coach, too. Here's what that means: You receive a neuro assessment, coach your neurofeedback provider about your symptoms and health goals, and your provider translates your coaching into a unique training program that helps the soccer team of your brain work towards playing together to take the shot and make the goal.
EEG Biofeedback is gentle and safe, especially for sensitive people. It involves putting sensors on your head, which act like ears, to listen to your brain's signals. Similar t how a coach listens to you and helps you get better at a sport. There's no electrical energy going in. And if you're taking medicine, it's okay—lots of people find that brain training can work well alongside their medicine. Of course, share this info with your prescriber so you feel comfortable.
This quote highlights the general safety and non-invasive nature of neurofeedback when provided by licensed professionals. Learn more at www.isnr.org.
EEG neurofeedback is considered a gentle method for supporting a person's mental health journey, too. According to the International Society for Neuroregulation & Research (ISNR), "Neurofeedback does not involve surgery or medication and is neither painful nor embarrassing."
Most clients experience no negative side effects when provided by a licensed professional. Sometimes, because each person's beautiful brain is unique, temporary feelings of fatigue or vivid dreams may occur as that client's brain adjusts. These usually fade quickly as the nervous system becomes stronger in regulating itself more efficiently.
At Mind Body Well Therapy, neurofeedback sessions are personalized and provided with deep care by a licensed professional. They are designed and paced to support your comfort, safety, and readiness.
Great question. Knowing up front how much time you need to commit to optimizing your brain's health is valuable in making a good choice for yourself.
