Deciding to seek the support you need is profoundly personal and private. Having the financial means within your budget is another step to making it happen. Let's explore your questions together.

Connecticare and United Healthcare

I'm an in-network provider for Connecticare and United Healthcare.

These companies offer many different types of plans. To find out if your plan policy covers behavioral health or mental health, please get in touch with the customer support phone number on the back of your card or log into your insurance account to check the provider directory online.

To help with that, scroll down this page for the codes used for reimbursement. You can refer to them when you speak with customer care or log in online.

Transparency is key in our billing process. While we cannot guarantee coverage, we will work with you to determine if your plan includes behavioral health services. A claim will be filed for your session, and we will know if your services are covered within approximately three weeks, plus or minus one week.

Your insurance company will be billed directly if your ConnecticutCare or United Healthcare health plan actively covers mental health services. However, it's important to note that your insurance company makes the final decision on reimbursement, and any discrepancies or issues should be addressed directly with them.

Benefits Disclaimer

Please know that checking for your Eligibility and Benefits is only an estimate provided by the insurance company, and you may see differences from what was reported. Also, there is no guarantee of payment. Benefits are subject to all contract limits and the member's status on the date of service. Accumulated amounts such as deductible or copay may change as additional claims are processed.

Out of network

I'm an out-of-network provider with all other insurance companies. If you are not with ConnecticutCare or United Healthcare, you will be billed the total rate and given a superbill as a receipt (unless another arrangement is discussed).

Even if you are not with ConnecticutCare or United Healthcare, there is still hope for reimbursement: many plans, especially PPOs, cover 'out-of-network' services like psychotherapy and counseling.

Call your customer care number and use the codes below to see if you have out-of-network benefits for the codes that apply to psychotherapy and counseling. It's also called behavioral health.

A superbill can be provided for your sessions. This detailed invoice includes the services provided, the cost of each service, and the necessary billing codes. You then submit your superbill to seek reimbursement from your insurance company. Superbills are your receipt of attending and paying for a session and the required billing codes.

Another option is setting up a simple and free account with Thrizer, a HIPAA-compliant company that makes it easy to receive reimbursements. By using Thrizer, I can submit the superbill on your behalf, saving you time and effort. You can learn more about them here. Additionally, you can do a free benefits check for yourself as well.

Read on for more info about superbills.

Out-of-network options: HSA & FSA

You may still have other options if you can't get reimbursed for out-of-network services.

Some clients use their Health Savings Accounts (HSAs) or Flexible Spending Accounts (FSAs) to pay for psychotherapy and counseling.

What is a health savings account? What is a flexible spending account? The details of these questions are outside my area of expertise.  I recommend you learn more about them by researching and speaking to a qualified financial expert.

This page has offered some help in providing answers and clarity.  Money and the ability to pay can be a barrier to getting the help you need if you let it. It doesn’t have to be. There are counseling resources available for every budget. Let me know if I can answer further questions.

Ask about these billing codes (aka CPT codes):

The following billing codes apply to services offered here.  All of these codes will likely not apply to you. That said, checking to see what is covered is good, so you know your options. In this way, you can make an educated and informed decision.

Also, by checking these codes, you erase any potential financial surprises. You can also enter therapy to do your inner work with less stress.
