Your Safety and Privacy
Safety and privacy are central to the work of any counselor and psychotherapist. People who hurt need a safe environment in order to return to health and mental wellness. A safe space where what is said is private and confidential is a necessity.
And your privacy is vital. So vital that it's covered by state and federal law, except in isolated cases. Those isolated cases that are the exceptions are, if someone wants to harm you or you wish to harm another person(s) or you are a threat to your own self.
Here are links to the law and your rights in the States of Connecticut, Maryland and Virginia where I practice and with the federal government at the Department of Health and Human Services. You'll find lots of details about your privacy and exceptions to your confidential health information.
