Holistic Counseling for the Health Professional

A Return to Wellness for the Compassionate Caregiver

Holistic Counseling for the health professional page updated 5-9-2025 ~ Written by Lucrezia Mangione, LPC, LCPC, NCC, BC-TMH, DCEP

Hello,

Does this ring somewhat true for you?  You're a giver. It’s natural and easy for you, until it’s not. Sometimes you wake up for your work day or shift and realize how exhausted you are.  You just don’t have it in you to help others today.  You muster it up, of course.  You deal and plow through it, of course.  You're a professional.  You’re responsible and dutiful because there are people, clients, and patients who rely on you, not to mention your family.

Sometimes every little request for help from your clients or patients seems way too much.  You feel shame well up. Maybe you’re wondering why you are doing this anymore because you’re just not feeling it today. And with that thought more shame or guilt rises to the surface.  You’re feeling disconnected from the reason you went into health care. The words “passion” and “sense of purpose” seem far, far away. Isn’t compassion fatigue something that happens to someone else?

Maybe today you realize something may need changing. You might be in transition or experiencing several transitions in your life. There might be another way, another path but you’re not sure about what it means for you both professionally and personally.

Understanding and Healing Compassion Fatigue

This realization brings you to a quiet, tender place inside.

Realizing you’re in transition and fatigued is hard to admit to yourself. You know you’re capable, you can handle the suffering of others and at the same time you feel tired.  Something is out of balance.

Whether you’re a counselor, nurse or other healthcare provider, you need someone who gets it.  Sometimes it’s hard to take care of you like you take care of the others around you. Reaching out is asking for a helping hand.
