Being A Highly Sensitive Person page updated 7-24-24 ~ Written by Lucrezia Mangione, LCPC, NCC, BC-TMH, DCEP
Dear Highly Sensitive Person,
As an HSP, you may often feel like there needs to be more space to express and communicate what's happening. You may be cautious about sharing because you've had experiences where people didn’t have the time—or the capacity—to truly listen.
As an HSP, you live in a world that values doing and thinking over being and feeling. It just happens that you can do both. You get it; you are not a talking head but a communicating human being. You need time to speak and express yourself from your rich inner world of sensing things while creatively using your insights to support the work you do in the world and for others—often in ways that others don’t see.
Holistic therapy, along with neurofeedback or ketamine-assisted psychotherapy, can provide an opening for you. It is a chance to remember how to reconnect to yourself and return to a place where you feel calm, centered, and anchored in your truth.
Our world and your life constantly change. How you respond can come with intense emotional ups and downs. As a highly sensitive person, you may:
This makes you a uniquely creative and productive, thoughtful and attentive person, with a depth of understanding that others may not possess. Your capacity for nuance, presence, and intuition is something to honor—not shrink from.
You want to feel in sync with yourself and anchored into the here and now. Even so, you can get overwhelmed sometimes. You may feel sand-blasted, sleepy, and mentally tired. To cope, sometimes you may binge-watch or emotionally eat or over-exercise or more. You’re still aware that you feel down or anxious, or you keep thinking about your thinking. Sometimes you feel misunderstood or unheard, or you need a little more time to share. And sometimes you just feel like you're different.
It's important to acknowledge that being a highly sensitive person can be exhausting at times, and it's okay to feel that way. You are not alone, and there are tools and support available to help you feel more grounded and understood.
Finding a place to explore what's getting in the way of the people and things you yearn for may mean finding a good-fit counselor and a healing space where you feel safe. It also means working with a mind-body therapist who is patient, present, and honors the pace that works for you.
Being a highly sensitive person often comes with a depth of emotion and awareness that deserves special care. Holistic mind-body therapy can help you identify overwhelming patterns, leading to a greater sense of calm, peace, and self-nurturance. This therapy supports a journey of self-exploration, self-worth, and self-discovery. It’s a gentle process that can help you shift into a healthier, more balanced state.
Combining holistic therapy with EEG brain training (also called neurofeedback) often helps people—especially highly sensitive individuals—reach their goals more efficiently. That’s because EEG brain training helps your nervous system return to balance, ease, and calm. Many highly sensitive people who use both neurofeedback and therapy report improved energy, focus, and mood, and often better sleep, too.
Another option is ketamine-assisted psychotherapy, which pairs holistic therapy with low-dose oral ketamine sessions. It helps bypass old thought patterns and opens a window into meaningful, lasting change. It’s gentle, empowering, and well-suited for being a highly sensitive person navigating the world with intensity and care.
